Solo, Not Lonely: Redefining the Day of Love - Cypress Moms Network

Hey there, Cypress moms network! Jessica here.

Valentine’s Day can sometimes feel like it’s strictly for the “plus-ones,” but let’s be real: it’s actually just a celebration of love. And if anyone knows how to give and receive love in its purest form, it’s a single mama! Whether you’re looking to spoil your kiddos, your besties, or (most importantly) yourself, you don’t need a partner to make the day feel special.

Here is how I’m reclaiming the holiday this year, and how you can too:

Create Your Own Magic

Who says you have to wait for “The One” to send flowers? Go buy that gorgeous bouquet at H-E-B for your own kitchen island.

But beyond the petals, have some fun playing Cupid for your crew. Get the kids involved with construction paper, glitter (if you’re brave enough), and those classic candy hearts.

Pro-Tip from my “Mom Files”: Last year, I went a little extra and tied giant heart balloons to plastic sticks, poking them out of my sunroof while I sat in the school car rider line. My youngest thought I was a hero; my oldest definitely wanted to hide under the seat. Either way, we laughed the whole way home, and it’s a memory we still talk about!

Don’t stop at the kids, either. Dropping a little treat off for a neighbor or a client can be just as rewarding as receiving something yourself.

Skip the Table for Two Drama

Let’s be honest: dining out on February 14th is usually a headache. Restaurants are packed with tiny tables for two, the service is rushed, and being surrounded by a sea of couples can sometimes feel a bit “meh” when you’re flying solo.

My advice? Stay in, order your favorite takeout, and avoid the overpriced prix-fixe menus.

Celebrate Your Girl Tribe

“Galentine’s Day” is a staple for a reason. Our friendships with other women are the backbone of how we survive single motherhood.

Gather your best girlfriends for a themed photo shoot, a cozy mom’s night in, or a loud happy hour the weekend after. I love celebrating the women in our community—nothing feels better than lifting up another mama who is out there doing the work every day.

Be Your Own Valentine

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to prioritize some “me time,” this is it. Go to the spa, book that massage, or finally buy that high-end skincare you’ve been eyeing.

I try to make pampering a regular habit with manicures and beauty services, but if you usually put yourself last, use Valentine’s Day as your official excuse to be Numero Uno. End the night with your favorite movie and the good snacks you don’t have to share with the kids.

Or... Just Skip It!

If the whole holiday feels like a manufactured “no thanks” to you, then reclaim your time and your wallet! Say “no” to the pressure, skip the pink and red aisles, and save that money for something that actually sparks joy—like a weekend getaway or those shoes you’ve had in your online cart for months.
