Meet a Dad – Dan Schoen | Cypress Moms Network

Happy Father’s Day! We typically share Meet a Mom interviews but this week, in honor of Father’s Day, we have decided to switch things up. Today we are showcasing Dan Schoen – he and his wife, Tammy, own and operate The Houston Swim Club Cypress and Pearland locations. I got the chance to meet Dan back in the fall of 2020 when he and his team showed me around the Cypress Houston Swim Club property. I was blown away by how professional the whole staff at The Houston Swim Club is and also by how down to earth, friendly, and kind Dan is. It is clear to see why this location embodies so many great characteristics – it stems from the top! I am excited for you to learn more about this incredible Dad.

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town?

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, but raised since the age of 3 in good ol’ Houston, Texas!

How many children do you have and what are their ages?

Two girls!  17-year-old Heather who is off to the University of Colorado – Boulder in the fall!  13-year-old Laci about to start 8th grade!

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

I am first generation American as I come from immigrant parents. My father is from Hungary & mom from Switzerland,

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?

Definitely my wife… Tammy.  She is amazing at balancing the raising of two crazy girls and all their activities (soccer, volleyball, swimming, school…. Etc… Etc) all while owning a business with me.  Pretty sure she lives by, “If I don’t stress, then they (and everything around me) won’t stress!”  We are a very chill family.

Favorite things to do with your kids around town?

Going to see the Houston Texans, Dynamo, Astros, and Rockets play is a lot of fun, but my favorite is hustling around town watching MY girls in their sports competitions.  Wouldn’t dare miss a game, match or meet!

Favorite local things to do in the Cypress area?

The FOOD!  The Cypress area has some fantastic, locally owned food destinations.  The Shack for burgers.  Alicia’s for Tex-Mex.  Locatelli’s for Italian.  Goodson’s Cafe for Chicken Fried Steak.  Just to name a few!

Our family owns and operates Houston Swim Club.  We teach infants, children, and adults to love swimming and to be safer in and around the water.

In fact, this is where I met my bride.  I was teaching swim lessons during my summers in college until I graduated and got my “real job”.  After watching my wife, her mother and sisters grow the business from one location to 3, I decided to quit my Mortgage Banking career and Tammy and I opened the 4th and 5th Houston Swim Club locations.

I look back now and realize that yes, I graduated college and got my “real job”.  But that was what it was… a J-O-B.  I come home now and we laugh together about all the fun we have.  The absolute hilarious things kiddos will do and say.  I love the amazing strides and improvements that happen within our walls. Our students learn incredible amounts in such a short period of time, and it is our passion to reduce drowning statistics, but now my personal work is with our team members who are leading that charge.  We employ Cypress area residents as Instructors, Lifeguards and Front Office Team Members and it is such a joy to watch them grow in their professional career.  Some are here temporarily, and some long-term, but they ALL love the impact they have on their students and often find themselves at Houston Swim Club with years and years and years under their belt!

Tell us what made Cypress the right location for The Houston Swim Club?

Our company vision statement is “Creating memories for your family is our family business.”  No matter how big we grow, we will always be a family business in everything we do.  Cypress is synonymous with family and we take pride in serving the families in this community.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

A family business, like ours, lives and dies by word-of-mouth.  We can talk all day long about the amazing things we do, and about how we are so much different than the franchised owned swim schools who are just investing money into “something”, but when someone in the community tells their neighbor “You have got to go to Houston Swim Club.  My kids adore their instructors and are learning so much!” … that there, is worth its weight in gold!

Since opening in Cypress in 2013, we have been blessed by just that.  A community that shares their stories and experiences they have and have had with us.  We really have a very small marketing budget, but we treat every customer like family and they tell their friends!
